Liability Insurance Information and Sites

Homeowners or renters insurance policies are limited or even negated when it comes to businesses within a home.  Most standard insurance policies supply limited coverage on accidents that occur.   Some insurance companies will cover you by adding to your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance. They charge an extra fee for this coverage.  You can also buy a policy to cover just liability for your daycare business.

If a child gets hurt in your home you could be held financially responsible.  Liability insurance is a type of insurance that offers coverage for the damage or medical expenses of someone who gets hurt in your home. Liability insurance can protect you and your possessions, up to the limits of the policy, if you were to be sued.

When selecting a Liability policy always check for EXCLUSIONS, or things the company will not cover.

Even if you have liability insurance, it is important to always take preventative safety measures. It is the responsibility of a caregiver to provide a safe environment with good supervision so that children do not get hurt. Parents are more likely to sue you if they think that you have been negligent.

Contact an insurance firm, such as Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and request an individual rate summary for the type of insurance you are seeking. They will generally ask you a few questions regarding the type of coverage you want and then provide you with several options.

Join a state or national childcare organization such as, NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children). For $45/yr dues they offer reduced insurance rates plus several other perks. For more information visit their website at http://www.naeyc.org/membership/

Whichever type of insurance coverage you choose count on a six-week turn around for them to process your application. A good rule of thumb is to not let previous coverage lapse before seeking new coverage. Lapse of previous coverage generally makes it more difficult to get approved for new coverage.
